It is particularly useful for students with reading problems like dyslexia. Both devices also include a test-taking feature which disables access to the dictionary yet allows students theright to use the pen's other features in discerning words or phrases. There's even a headphone jack so as not to disrupt others in the room. Your pen comes stock with earphones, but you can also plug it into speakers if need be. You can listen to the pen pronounce the word itself, the sentence, or the definition all while using the digital interface to see the scanned sentence, word, or definition.If desired, you can even adjust the speed of the pens text-to-speech capabilities. Wizcom Reading pensare excellent for people with impaired vision allowing them to read independently again. Despite not seeing small text well, you should be able to see the line of text you want to scan and the pen will read it aloud for you. However, these pensare not useful for those unable to see well enough to be able to follow and scan printed text in a straight line.
In a classroom setting, the Wizcom reading pen is an excellent learning device that helpsstudents deal with problems associated with reading difficulties. Many children do not understand a word as they are trying to read it, but upon hearing it pronounced,the greater majority of the time, they will recognize the word. Children love it as it plays into their propensity towards using technology; it's much more fun than having to grab a dictionary and search for a definition. Very young children have difficulties searching in a dictionary anyway, but they won't have these problems using the reading pen. In helping students read books alone, it has the added benefit of instilling within them a bit of independence as they identifyproblematic words and look-up definitions effectively promoting a kind of self-teaching. Printed texts can even be scanned and saved onto the Reading Pen TS for later use saving time on note-taking in class. Teachers love it! The reading pens have an option allowing teachersto lock access to the dictionary and password-protect it. Students will still be able to scan words, hear the scanned words read aloud, and view the words in a large font display thoughno definitions will be offered. This feature has a multitude of applications. (To lock the dictionary function of a Wizcom reading pen: go to menu, select lock dict.,click "access," select a 4-digit password and then enter it. Don't forget to write it down since you will need it to unlock the dictionary function again.
The reading pen is programmed in a very convenient way. Scanning can be done from left to right, but also from right to left – it doesn't make any difference. The pen will always know how to read and display the sentence in the correct order. Those who are right-handed may prefer to scan from right to left because your hand won't hide the sentence you'rescanning – it's a lot easier.Conversely, if you're left-handed you may prefer scanning from left to right.
The reading pen cannot recognize handwritten text; it only works with printed text. Some of my customers ask me if the reading pen can scan a screen (i.e. computer screen, palm pilot, phone). The answer is no, it can't. You will have to print the text first to be able to scan it. If you have extremely impaired vision it would not work for you since you have to be able to see well enough to be able to follow a line of text as you scan it. The reading pen is not recommended for people with impaired fine motor control skills either. Reading pens pronounces words in English only – not in Spanish.
